The story of Christ’s crucifixion set to music in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, one of the greatest works of sacred music in human history, has been a source of wonder to listeners and a source of devotion to believers since its first performance on Good Friday in 1727. Bach’s profound faith and musical genius are both in evidence. This event, hosted by Grace Presbyterian Church, will unpack both the artistry and the theology of this monumental work.
Maestro Gier will conduct the SDSO performance of the St Matthew Passion on Saturday, April 2. “The Beauty of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion” will prepare you for hearing the music like never before. Visit sdsymphony.org for tickets.
what to expect
If you’re wondering what to expect at this event, listen to Episode 57 of The Commentary. Titled “How to Worship with Bach,” this episode features a conversation with Delta David Gier describing some of the insights into the St Matthew Passion we will explore on March 27.
more “hearing the music”
If you want more Bach, check out the Hearing the Music podcast, where David and Mark unpack the riches of another Bach passion, the St John Passion. Our March 27 event will essentially be a live version of what we did on the podcast.
